CECAFA Kagame Cup 2021 dates confirmed

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2021 will take place August 1-15 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director said the draw for the regional tournament played between the top clubs will be conducted on July 27th.

“This tournament will help our teams in the region prepare for the CAF competitions that start in September. We shall also have a guest team from Malawi to spice up the tournament,” added Gecheo. Uganda will be represented by the KCCA FC, the defending champions and the 2020/2021 Uganda Premier League champions Express FC.

Gecheo confirmed that Malawi Premier League side Big Bullets FC will take part in the tournament.

While Simba SC who reached the quarter final stage of the CAF 2020/2021 TotalEnergies Champions League will miss the regional competition, Young Africans and Azam FC will represent Tanzania.

KCCA FC beat Azam FC to lift the Kagame Cup in 2019. Last year the tournament did not take place after the COVID-19 pandemic affected most sporting activities including football.

Teams confirmed for Kagame Cup 2021: Young Africans SC, Azam FC (Tanzania), Altabara FC (South Sudan), Le Messager Ngozi FC (Burundi), APR (Rwanda), Express FC, KCCA FC (Uganda), Tusker FC (Kenya), KMKM SC (Zanzibar), Big Bullets FC (Malawi).

Army side APR FC retains Rwanda Premier League title

Army side APR FC are the champions of the 2023/2024 Rwanda Premier League.

Coach Thierry Froge’s team registered a 1-0 win against Kiyovu Sports FC on Saturday to win their fifth straight League title.

After a goalless first half, Gilbert Mugisha netted the lone goal after 51 minutes in a match played at the Kigalui Pele Stadium. Kiyouvu Sports FC tried to push forward to get some goals, but the APR FC goalkeeper Pavelh Ndzila kept them at bay.

The win saw APR FC move to 63 points from 27 matches played, while Rayon Sports Fc are placed second with 51 points and Musanze FC 47 points in third place. The army side are yet to face Gasoyi United FC, Gorilla FC and Amagaju FC.

” We are very happy that after hard work we have won the League title with three more matches to be played, ” said the APR Coach Froge.

In the other matches played on Saturday Rayon Sports beat Bugesera FC 2-1, while Marines FC Gisenyi also picked a 2-1 victory against Police FC. Etoile de Lest defeated Amagaju FC 1-0.

APR FC who have now lifted 22 League title in Rwanda will represent the country in the 2024-2025 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Young Africans battle Simba SC in biggest League derby in CECAFA Zone

All roads will lead to the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium today Saturday to witness the Kariakoo derby in the NBC Tanzania Premier League between arch-rivals Young Africans SC and Simba SC.

It is also the biggest League derby in the CECAFA Zone which will pit the two teams in the Zone that reached the quarter final stage of the 2023/2024 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

After bowing out at the quarter final stage of TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, the two sides will be all out to try and prove a point to send a strong message to their fans. Of course Young Africans SC go into the match with a lot of confidence with a 4 point league on the log ahead of Azam FC who have played two matches more, while Simba SC have 46 points from 20 matches.

Miguel Gamondi, the Young Africans SC head coach said that although it is a derby, it is like any other game. ” We have prepared well and the players are very motivated to come out and win the match. Yes we respect our opponents and what happened before will not matter in the match on Saturday, ” said Gamondi.

In their last meeting i the first leg of the League last November, Young Africans brushed a side their rivals 5-1 in a match played at the same Stadium.

But Simba SC who bowed out of the CRDB Bank Confederation Cup few days ago are expected to come all out to try and prove a point. Selemani Matola, the Simba SC assistant coach said during an interview that although they know their opponents are enjoying good form, they are well prepared for the match.

” We are well prepared and remember this is a derby which makes it a very strong match, ” added Matola. The Simba SC captain Shomari Kapombe also summed it up saying they have prepared well and will be all out targeting three points from that match.

While Simba SC will look to the experience of Burundian international Saidi Ntibazonkiza and Clatous Chama for the goals, Young Africans Sc will hope that their midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki who has netted 14 goals in the League now finds his scoring touch.

Referee Ahmed Arajiga is expected to take charge of the match which is expected to attract over 40,000 spectators from within Tanzania and from other countries.

Besides the Tanzanian Kariakoo derby, the other big derbies in the CECAFA Zone include Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in Kenya, and Al Merriekh and Al Hilal in Sudan.

Kenya, Uganda school teams set for ISF Football World Cup in Dalian

Schools from Kenya and Uganda have been drawn in the 2024 International School Sport Federation (ISF) Football World Cup to take place in China.

The Football World Cup for schools that will attract teams from several continents will take place May 17-27th in the city of Dalian.

In the draw conducted on Tuesday in Dalian by the ISF President of the Technical Commission who is also the 1st Vice President of the Uganda FA, Justus Mugisha, Kenya’s girls schools (Not yet named) was placed in Group D together with St. Noa Girls (Uganda), Germany, England and Ghana.

Amus College Schools from Mbale in Uganda was placed in Group C to place against Brazil, Czech Republic, Canada and Nigeria.

In the boys category the team from Kenya (Not yet named) was placed together with Benin, Amus College School (Uganda) and Taipei in Group G, while and  in Group Another Ugandan side, St. Marys College Kisubi is placed in Group E alongside Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, England, Hungary and New Zealand.

“It was a great experience performing a draw for 56 teams from the top 33 football countries of the world in this great city of China, Dalian, ” said Mugisha.

He said the facilities in Dalian like hotels and stadiums ate first class and he is optimistic the tournament will be successful.

China and France are the reigning champions for the girls and boys categories respectively. During last year’s ISF World Cup held in Rabat, Morocco, St. Noa Girls bagged bronze in the girls category.

Kitara eject Cup holders SC Vipers in Stanbic Uganda Cup quarter final

Bunyoro based Kitara FC have ejected Cup holders SC Vipers at the quarter final stage of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

Kitara FC, the surprise package who also lead the Uganda Premier League standing edged Vipers SC 5-4 in penalty shoot-outs after the match had ended 1-1 at the Masindi Stadium on Sunday.

After a goalless first half striker Yunus Ssentamu gave Vipers the lead after 51 minutes, but Paul Mucureezi leveled matters after 67 minutes from the spot.

The game later went into extra 30 minutes after the 90-minutes ended 1-1. Bright Anukani restored Vipers’ lead a penalty conversion after 117 minutes. But six minutes later Mucureezi was on hand to level matters for The Royals again infront of their passionate fans.

During the penalty shoot outs Karim Watambala missed for Vipers SC, while Kitara converted all their five with Mucureezi netting the last penalty.

Kitara FC now join Bidco FC,  NEC FC and Pajule Lions FC. Bidco Fc ejected KCCA FC 6-5 on penalties on Saturday after a 1-1 draw, while NEC saw off Police FC 2-0, and Pajule Lions defeated Pakwach Young Stars 1-0.

The winner of the Stanbic Uganda Cup will represent Uganda in the 2024/2025 TotalEnergies Confederation Cup.
